Tactical analysis[edit]

The acolyte can fire homing skulls at the Doom Slayer, and scatter rifts of cosmic energy around the battlefield to both damage and impede the Slayer's movement. The acolyte can also shield itself and generate a silver-skinned clone to fight alongside it; the clone must be killed to drop the shield.

Acolytes will frequently try to get away from the Slayer by dashing or teleporting. They are vulnerable to shield charges and throws and these should be used to hold the acolyte in place. A single super shotgun blast at close range is usually enough to make them vulnerable to an execution, and a dreadmace strike will kill them outright.

Lore[edit]

Previously hallowed Sentinel priests of Argent D'Nur, the acolytes' souls have been corrupted by the eldritch touch of the Witch. This cosmic taint bestows forbidden sight beyond the mortal veil, and powers capable of rending the fabric of reality. Though the acolytes are many, they serve as one, like a snake with many heads. Their actions betray the world they swore to protect, allowing infiltration by the malice of the outer realms.

Pre-release[edit]

This enemy first became known in one of the frames of the Xbox developer deep-dive, where the whiteboard was leaked with a list of monster names, which includes the acolyte.[1] Later, the concept art of the creature could be seen beteen 36 and 43 seconds into the first episode of The Art of Slaying.[2] The monster's official reveal with footage of the fight against it took place in the game's reviews, which were released from embargo on May 9th.
